What You’ll Learn
Over three sessions, you will develop essential techniques in portrait drawing using charcoal, from basic structure to refined detail.
Week 1: Foundations & Proportions
• Introduction to charcoal materials and tools
• Understanding facial proportions
• Observing from a reference photograph
• Creating a gesture drawing to map the portrait
Week 2: Shapes, Light & Shadow
• Blocking in the main facial shapes
• Understanding light and shadow
• Building depth and form using tonal values
Week 3: Refining & Final Details
• Enhancing facial features and details
• Strengthening contrast and shading
• Bringing the portrait to completion

Meet Your Instructor
Kulwant Singh is a Brampton-based visual artist known for his realistic portraiture that captures the depth and expression of the human face, with a strong focus on South Asian representation. His work explores everyday life through thoughtful observation and refined technique.
While he primarily works in oil painting, Kulwant is also highly skilled in charcoal, conté, and pastel drawing, bringing a strong foundation in traditional drawing practices to his teaching.
He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Drawing & Painting) and two Master’s degrees in Fine Arts and Art History from Panjab University, Chandigarh.
Kulwant has received several notable recognitions, including:

• Finalist – Almenara Art Prize (2025), Córdoba, Spain
• Best of Painting Award (2023) – Toronto Outdoor Art Fair
