Why Join an Art Competition? A Personal Reflection + Invitation to Start

Entering an art competition can feel both exciting and intimidating. Whether you’re just starting out or have been creating for years, putting your work out there takes courage. But beyond the nerves lies something incredibly valuable: growth, connection, and possibility.

If you’ve ever wondered whether it’s worth submitting your work, this is your sign to explore what can happen when you do.

Why Join an Art Competition?

Whether you’re an amateur or professional, joining an art competition can be a great way to meet other artists, gain exposure for your work, and see what others are creating. It also gives you a chance to reflect on your own artistic journey to see what’s working, what’s evolving, and where you want to go next.

And who knows? You might even walk away with a prize.

Facing Doubt & Taking the Leap

When I first entered an art competition, I was filled with doubt. There was an entry fee, and imposter syndrome crept in as I thought about all the talented artists who might be applying.

Despite that, I decided to go for it.

If you like the work you’ve created, someone out there probably will too. And it’s worth remembering: your art doesn’t need validation to have value. The joy of creating is already a reward in itself.

The Waiting Game & Rejection

After submitting, I waited.

Sometimes, you receive that email that begins with “Unfortunately…”—and you already know where it’s going. Other times, your work gets selected.

I’ve experienced both.

Rejection is part of the process, not the end of it.

In one instance, my artwork was selected and featured alongside 100 other artists at Kellogg Lane in London. Walking through the gallery, seeing the range of styles and the dedication behind each piece, was incredibly inspiring. I even had the chance to connect with professional artists, something I hadn’t expected.

The Big Day

As the competition came to a close, there were two top 10 categories: one chosen by judges and another by public vote.

When I found out I had made the top 10 for the judges’ choice award, I was beyond thrilled. It was unexpected and deeply affirming.

At the venue, I met the other finalists, shared conversations, and took in the moment. They provided us with delicious food and refreshments, then began announcing the winners. In the end, I didn’t win first place, but being there meant everything. It meant my work resonated with someone.

And that alone made it worthwhile.

Or simply the experience itself.

Start small. Enter a local competition just for fun. Then try another, and another.

Sometimes, the most meaningful part isn’t the outcome; it’s having the courage to begin.
